Deciding to Travel

The day I set off for travelling is drawing closer and it’s really had me thinking about the journey its taken for me to get to this point. Two years ago my sister set off for a year to live and work in Australia and although she had been to amazing places and travelled before, seeing her set off for the adventure of a lifetime really inspired me. I had always been interested in travelling to some extent but the thought of leaving for an extended period of time had never crossed my mind.

Something just clicked when she left and I decided there and then I knew this was something I really wanted to do. I hadn’t quite finished University at this point but I had come to the decision I was not going to continue with my third year, instead I would work and save so that I could go off and live my own adventure.

For most of 2013 I was working as much as I could and was saving whatever possible but working part time limited how much I could put away and after breaking up with my boyfriend at the time I no longer had anyone to travel with. I thought I’d never have the opportunity to go as I figured my sister would be ready to settle when she came back to the UK and as far as I was aware at that point none of my friends were interested in long term travel. So when I was invited to go and meet my sister and her friends in the Philippines I already had money in the bank so just 4 weeks before I booked my flights and agreed to go!

It was an amazing experience, despite having terrible weather while we were there, and it confirmed that travel was something I was truly passionate about. I knew I had to find a way to travel as much as possible while I was in a position to so when my friend said she wanted to travel and had the money to go I couldn’t believe my luck. I had already booked a holiday again with my sister visiting Thailand Bali, the Gili Islands and Malaysia for three weeks so this put a delay on when we would be able to go but at least I was on the right track.

When I got back the pressure was really on to get saving! I had to leave my part time job that I really enjoyed and ended up landing a full time role in a call centre. This is where I still am now for the last few weeks before my trip. I have been working hard and saving over three quarters of my paycheck in order to get the money I need but it has so been worth it. It’s been difficult living on such a tight budget but with such amazing motivation it’s definitely do-able!

It feels like forever since I made the decision to go to the point where there’s only a few weeks to go until I leave. I didn’t give up and it just goes to show where determination and working hard can get you. I’d love to hear from any of you guys what inspired you to travel and how you got to a point where you could, feel free to let me know your stories in the comments below!
